So many things can change in just one year's time. So many things...
Once there was a time where Death's Weapon Meister Academy was a proud symbol of peace and stability to the world, but now this proud monument stands in shambles, its reputation smeared and its members scattered. And all of this at the hands of one man. A single student who was once seen as a prodigy; a new era of the DWMA, has brought forth an era of its destruction, but this tale of treachery has changed many people's lives, and destroyed many more. The irony of the DWMA’s destruction is that it all started after the defeat of the Demon God Asura.
Much to the head master Shinigami’s expectations, once the Demon God was slain, his insanity wavelength was severely weakened. The DWMA celebrated their victory and saw a drastic increase in the strength of corrupted souls; making harvesting and eliminating them easier than ever. Because of this, it became that much easier for students to directly challenge Witches as the magical beings usually relied on corrupted souls to distract the humans from them. The trouble began to brew when the witches became the prime target of Shibusen.
A meeting was held at the Witch’s council where all witches in attendance would devote their powers to harvesting and cultivating the remainder of the world’s madness in hopes of creating yet another Demon God. This plan backfired terribly on them. Many of the Witches themselves went mad and attacked one-another. A civil war broke out between Witches, splitting their community in half. Many Witches went rogue whilst many others attempted to revitalize the council. It seemed as if the word would finally be rid of both Witches and Kishin and Shibusen would reign supreme, but as Murphy’s Law states: Whatever can happen, will happen.
One of the DWMA’s top students and a member of the Seven Saints, an elite group of students at the time, fell in love with a Witch. Once this heinous act was discovered by a teacher, their relationship was thrown into turmoil when the Witch was captured. As punishment, Head Master Shinigami demonstrated the consequences of such an act by forcing the student to witness as his lover was sealed away behind Shinigami’s mirror to be frozen in time for all eternity. Left to rot in his own misery and grief the young man was given a life sentence in the prison beneath the school, but after nearly a month of soaking in his own heart-broken insanity, the prisoner broke free, killed several people and devoured their souls.
This rogue student went on a wild killing spree until the remaining members of the Saints attempted to subdue him. It was a short battle, but the six students were able to stop their former comrade’s slaughter; however, after hesitating about dealing the final blow, the rogue student escaped. As he wandered the world as a wild corrupt soul he killed and feasted on the souls of everyone who he came in contact with, that is, until he came face to face with a Mad Witch. This witch’ plagued by insanity, sacrificed her own soul to this rogue killer, giving him a maddening boost of inhuman power. Ironically, this Witch’s soul was the 100th soul the rogue weapon had devoured, which transformed him into an insanity plagued Death Scythe.
With his newfound power, the Death Scythe returned to the DWMA a year later with the intensions of destroying it utterly. Single-handedly he nearly decimated Death City in its entirety and slaughtered countless students and teacher before being confronted by the Saints again; however, this time the tables were turned. The rogue Death Scythe slaughtered his former kin and devoured their souls, saving that of his twin brother’s for last.
When he devoured the final soul, he finally ascended to the status of a new Demon God, but ironically, the effects of devouring the soul of his twin brother restored his sanity and sealed his insanity. The rogue student, while possessing the madness wavelength and strength of a Kishin, could not harness the true power of a Demon God. Knowing that he could not yet face off against the head master Shinigami, the new Demon God fled the destroyed school and spent the next five years building an army of corrupt souls to finally overthrow Shibusen in its entirety.
